How can I lose weight fast?

Isn’t that what we all want? Especially after the holiday season. Fast. Fat. Loss. Why not throw in easy, effortless fat loss? Magic fairy dust fat loss too.

Sure, if you read the magazines and look at all the advertising that bombards us in January, from celebrity diets to promises of big fat losses from drinking powders instead of eating meals, you can lose weight fast – BUT, can you keep it off?

In the distant past I tried all the fast fat loss diets. From the Israeli Army diet, the hip and thigh diet, the original Atkins diet, the bread diet, you name it, I most likely tried it. Yes, I lost weight on every single one of them, but I put it all back on, and more, at the end of each one for the simple reason that these kinds of diets don’t teach you what to eat. Unless you learn what to eat, how much to eat and why, then you most likely will keep repeating the yo-yo dieting cycle as I did for way too many years.

Simply the term ‘going on a diet’ implies that at some time you will ‘come off the diet’. In my experience people who successfully lose weight and keep it off have learnt what they need to do and then do it most of the time. Losing weight should not be seen as punitive or deprivation. It shouldn’t involve continuous hunger and cravings – if it does, you aren’t on the right plan for you.

To be able to lose weight and keep it off long term you need to learn how best to manage your lifestyle and have the commitment to do so the majority of the time. It isn’t about being perfect, or never eating treats, that isn’t realistic or sustainable. It is about forming long term habits that get you where you want to be and keep you there. Sometimes it is better to just tweak one or two habits, say drink more water every day and be mindful of portion sizes, than to make lots of changes all at once. Whatever you find most helpful – just do it!

Don't give up!

It’s easy to feel all fired up after the holidays, but sometimes the motivation dwindles fast. It happens. Don’t let it set you back, just accept that you went a bit off track and make the next day a better day.

Perseverance, not perfection will get you where you want to be.

Detoxing

This is another popular topic in January, with advertisements encouraging you to detox your body after the excesses of the holiday period. The best way to detox is to simply stop putting low nutrient food into your mouth, give your body a break from alcohol, do some exercise, drink plenty of water and consume plenty of fresh veggies along with fresh, real food. How simple and inexpensive is that? Actually, doesn’t that sound like something we should be doing most of the time anyway? Our bodies are perfectly capable of detoxing themselves, given the opportunity. That’s what our detox organs (liver, kidneys and skin) are for.

With the long summer days it is the perfect time to make the most of the wide array of beautiful, healthy, fresh food around and also to form a regular exercise habit. Let’s get together and get you on your way to a healthier, happier you in 2018.
