What do you eat when you're not feeling well?

Sometimes when you aren’t feeling well, your appetite decreases and you just don’t feel like eating.  Or if you do have an appetite, you don’t know what to eat and none of your usual meals appeal.

Our bodies still need nourishment to help with the healing process, so eating light, high nutrient meals is important.  Here are some suggestions for the occasions when you really don’t feel like eating much, yet know you should still eat.

  • Liquid meals are often more appealing.  Something like milk or yoghurt + fruit in a blender.  If you want to add fibre, add in some L.S.A. or ground linseed.  You can also throw in baby spinach leaves or kale for extra nutrition.

  • If you can’t be bothered making a smoothie, then a banana and a glass of milk is a simple, but healthy option.

  • Soups of course are great, but if you don’t feel up to making your own try adding 100g of cooked chicken to a tin of soup and warming it through.

  • If you feel up to making a big pot of veggie soup, add in lentils or a can of beans to increase the protein content.

  • Eggs are nutrient dense and so easy to prepare. Scrambled eggs, omelettes, poached or boiled eggs are all nourishing and light on the stomach.

  • A pot of yoghurt and some nuts.

  • Fish is easier to digest than red meat, so a fish meal is a good idea.  Use canned salmon or tuna if you don’t have fresh fish.

Usually the lack of appetite only lasts a couple of days, so do your best to eat small, light meals during this time and be sure to stay well hydrated.
